Northwest Missouri State University takes pride in preparing educators who reach and inspire the students they teach and lead. As a two-time recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, Northwest offers an exemplary program built upon a culture of quality.
The Northwest School of Education is a community that embraces collaboration and mutual respect among students, faculty and staff. Our successful learning community welcomes and honors the diverse voices and talents of each of its members. We strive to prepare excellent, effective teachers and leaders who catalyze educational excellence by preparing PK-12 professional educators and leaders who apply best practices to positively impact learning. Our school fosters inquiry, collaboration and innovation. Â Â
The Northwest campus includes a lab school serving PK-sixth grade. This gives students an opportunity to engage in meaningful experiences with students early in their preparation program. The Leet Center, which focuses on Early Education beginning at age three, serves children’s developmental needs and serves as a learning space for our college students. The Horace Mann Elementary School serves students in grades K-6 in investigative learning. Â

In my first semester at Northwest, I observed in a 1st grade classroom. By the same time the next year, I was learning to prepare lessons and teach them to actual children. While this pushed me out of my comfort zone, I had the support of my professors at every step of the way. I truly think that I was more prepared to be a teacher through my experience at Northwest.

The mission of the School of Education is to prepare caring teachers who possess the highest level of professional knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary to help all students learn in a diverse and ever-changing world. This principle serves as the guiding framework for the developmental learning opportunities afforded to teachers in training in the various programs offered throughout the department. Our programs are nationally accredited (since 1954) through NCATE and plan to continue to seek national accreditation through the Council of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the state of Missouri through the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the office of Educator Quality for the state of Missouri. In 2016, Northwest was selected by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Eduction (AACTE) as a case study and on-campus visit to chronicle the best uses of data and assessment systems to continually improve teacher education.
